Standing Frozen in the path I’ve Chosen ? Just Make a Switch

I love these lines from the ‘Frozen’ movie track. ❄️

Right, To begin with, have been a happy Software Engineer for the past 4 years. But I initially studied to be a Chemical Engineer.

Wait, What !!

Yes you read correct. Studied Chemical Engineering for 6 years. Had two beefy degrees on my portfolio. Was even going for a 3rd but joined Infosys to kick start my career on the path quite opposite to the one I had paved before.

So, what changed my mind ?

Well, simple. Didn't get selected into any of the colleges for pursuing a doctorate. So instead of waiting, decided to switch my career trajectory. Clearly put, you need consistency and resolution to prep for a whole year again which I lacked in ample.

I tried so hard and got so far ..

Ironically this was the bitter truth for me. I had applied into all the major IITs and received interview calls from a couple of them. For instance, IIT Madras -couldn’t clear the written round, IIT Delhi - got rejected in the interview round and IIT Guwahati - found my name in the waiting list. So if you feel nothing’s working out for you in your life, I suggest have a look around.

Do I regret it ?..Never

It was never my aspiration to work in a core industry (industries where you require to do field jobs), always wanted to teach (hence the doctorate degree). Though studied my favorite stream, curbing my possibilities down was something I didn’t want to do. So decided to take my chances and found that I loved Java as much as Mass Transfer (My most preferred Chemical Engineering subject).

Its Just Beautiful..

I joined Infosys and was called to Mysore campus for training. If you’ve never visited the campus, you’re missing something tremendous. It’s a 337 acres of pure bliss. The buildings are surrounded with lush greenery and you might even spot peacocks roaming. Amidst that we had a strict schedule of classes, assignments and exams. Its a rigorous training process the company follows and they start from down right scratch. Though its been 2 years I’ve left the company, the memory of it remains.

The billion dollar Question — Is a switch difficult ?

Yes it is . what do you expect 😅

Then How ?

You need to adore what you do, that’s how . When I studied Chemical, my thoughts were what iron component can be used for a better Fenton reaction and later it was how to optimize my code for a faster processing time and a better output. It was as if I had made a jump from chemical reactions to Big(O) notations. 😄

So yes.. Go ahead . Change and adapt. ✨
